Airtunes skipping

Hi,

with my brothers iBook (G3 800 Mhz, 640MB RAM) Airtunes keeps skipping.

Only Entourage, iChat are running (minimized) (and obviously iTunes).

The Airport reception is maxed out.

With my Powerbook 1,5Ghz Airtunes works flawless. I wonder if the skipping is due to the "slow" processor in the ibook, but I heard of people which have slower processors and didn't encounter any problems.

Any suggestions?

This is at the same location?

The only problems I've seen have been due to weak signals.

This is at the same location.

The distance to the base station is aprox. 4 meters, the reception is top.

Your powerbook has Airport Express aka: 802.11g which is theoretically five times faster than your brother's iBook's Airport, aka: 802.11b.

Airtunes, unfortunately, sends music as an encrypted, uncompressed stream*, which hogs your bro's bandwidth.

    * or perhaps barely compressed; I forget which.

It's encoded as Apple Lossless (ALAC) so that the stream can be sent encrypted to the base station. I have this happen now and then as well. Sometimes if the processor is taxed you get the skipping. The bandwidth on the regular AirPort (11 Mbps) is more than enough for the streaming, it's basically the processor.

Well, then it's time for a new laptop.

    Thanks

I was having the same problem. It was caused by the fact that I have a mixed Airport and Airport Extreme (b and g) network. I fixed it in the end by limiting the base station to work with b only.
