External Hard Drive Advice

Hi all,

I just purchased a Lacie 250GB Porsche Firewire External Hard drive for $150 (!) and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what I can do with it.

Of course, I understand that it gives me additional space and allows me to back up my data blah blah blah but what other options do i have?

Can someone tell me what partitioning is useful for, and how do i do it? Are there any good backup programs that you know of - I'm looking for a one click backup of my entire drive (not just files but all aspects on the OS settings) so that if my powerbook hard drive crashes i can be back up and running as soon as possible. (Please don't recommend versiontracker - I have looked but don't really understand what I'm looking for). Also, any software is good, but freeware is better!

Anything else you guys do with an external hard drive? Any advantages that I'm missing?

Thanks.

D.

I have the 160GB version and use it for my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, as well as a scratch disk for video editing and stuff.

To partition you can use Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) although I couldn't explain to you what it does or what the benefits are.

One thing I can warn you about: the bigger the disk, the greater chance it has of failing. \
