recommendations for editing system?
I know someone who is interested in a editing system. What are the recommendations you have? The education pricing is availabe, so that helps, but I really don't think money is too much of a problem. Besides the dual g5, and the final cut suite, what is needed for ram? and other misc? DV deck? TV monitor for viewing? and what would be needed to do that? Thanks. I am too tired to do research, so figured this was easier.

I would say get as much ram as you can (ie 4/8gb) if you plan on handeling alot of video.
Also a tv is a must cos the output differs slightly from what you see on a monotor (moostly colours), but im not sure how HD-TV affects ths, so maybe a HD-TV.
Two apple cinema displays will make things alot easier (eg one for the timeline and some tools, another for the source materials, fx panel etc)
Youd want a superdrive for sure (obvoiusly)
Apart from that, maybe a decent 5.1 / 7.1 sound system for sorting the music on it.

Instead of dropping major cash on a HD preview monitor I'd recommend getting either dual 30" (one for working and one for preview aka "Digital Cinema Desktop"). The color accuracy on the 30" is spectacular. Or a 23" for preview and a 30" for editing, but the 23"'s color isn't as accurate as the 30".
Make sure you post a pic when (/if) you get it all!

true, a hd tv will be expensive so maybe just a normal one, but i think having two apple cinema displays then an extra tv will give you a great workspace and make the job easier.

SD TV is dead.
The digital cinema desktop is really the way to go. For $2699 you get a 30" true color (well- good to great color) HD flat panel from Apple
or
You can get something like this from sony which is only 14" and costs almost $5K...
Hmmmmmm- the Sony's color will be a little better, but it's also smaller and costs a lot more.
Dual 2.5Ghz G5
4.5 GB ram
radeon 9800XT (get the nvidia 6800 or ati x800)
2 x 250GB sata (internals, the 2nd one for capturing media)
23" apple display (or 20, either way)
some sort of production monitor or 2nd apple display (i doubt this person we'll be dealing with HD if he can't build a system for himself.)
instead of the $1500 sony dv/dvcam deck, just get a cheap minidv camcorder (unless you'll be capturing from dvcam tapes)
you DON'T need more than 4.5GB for this setup. it would be a waste of money. I have to try to fill mine up.
hope this helps. while money may not be an issue, there's no sense in buying useless equipment. it's not like it all has to be bought at the same time.
Tempo-X eSATA Controller
Powermac G5 2.5GHz
HDlink from Blackmagic
23" Cinema Display
Production Suite (FCP,DVDSP,Motion)
Logic Pro 7.1
Curious gFX Rotoscoping app
Automatic Duck exporter
Get Ampede plugins for
continuous rasterization
Rhino Jr 400 SATA Case-Removable and 4 SATA Drives
$10k isn't going to buy you much but if you can get the software on edu discount you're going to get maximum bang for your buck. Things only get better after NAB 2005 in a week.
I'll keep a look out. Thanks for the replies.
