Just curious as to when you guys think SuperDrive's will become standard on all Apple computers? With all the software Apple has, it only makes sense. At least I think.

for you and other consumers it makes sense. for apple, who cashes a premium of $100-$200 for the superdrive option, it makes more sense to leave it this way for a while.

in fact, they would be stupid to make the superdrive a standard option, because a lot of people are willing to pay for it.

I had a friend who just bought a mac, and has said had no use for a super drive, but upgraded anyways. Most people, even if they're not going to use it, will upgrade.

They should be standard because the real world price difference is fairly low these days.

However Apple generally tries to protect their gross margins so I can't see it happening on Powerbooks until a CPU upgrade (dual core G4, or low power G5). I could see PowerMacs fairly soon though given the higher margins they already have, iBooks, iMacs, eMacs not soon I would think.

Yeah, they probably want there to be an upgrade option available all the time. So, until something new comes out, like the BlueRay, then they will keep combo drives as standard.

Superdrives inclusion should just follow industry standards.

Right now it's pretty difficult to buy a PC for over a $1000 without a DVD burner but Apple insists that you pay over $1300 for the privledge.

For a company that is so right on what's needed in an OS I cannot for the life of me figure out why Apple is so clueless when it comes to consumer Mac hardware.

it aint clueless, it's making money.

    btw:

    $599 = Mac mini +superdrive

    $999 = eMac +superdrive

    both are consumer products

what's SUPER about them? The fact that they aren't dual layer? The fact that they weren't supporting all formats? The fact that there are better cheepier drives?

Question has been answered. Please close, or move this ridiculous thread. This really has nothing to do with future hardware anymore if it ever did, and the superdrive is already the standard drive anyway so that would constitute this being in current hardware.

    They aren't DL yet

Yeah I guess you're right. I'm being biased because I think the next iMac at $1299 won't have a Superdrive(TS rumors) and that's a travesty.

    We'll see.
