New to scanning

in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
I am pretty new to scanning. The software I am using for my scanner (the HP psc 2210) gives me a choice of saving as TIFF or JPEG. Which choice is the better one to preserve the most quality? I would also appreciate if any one can give me tips on scanning, or point me to an article or web site on getting the best scans.

TIFF is better quality. Jpeg uses compression (loss of data) to make the image files smaller. The best scans are at the scanner's OPTICAL resolution (not necessarily the Max resolution) and at the greatest color depth (30bit, 42bit, and 48bit are common) Other pointers, scan side down calibrate your monitor the best you can, and use ColorSync to set your input to scanner, display to your calibrated monitor, and output to your printer. That works pretty well.
