Toshiba Demonstrates Cell Simultaneously Decoding 48 MPEG-2 Streams

Toshiba has revealed that its Cell microprocessor jointly developed with the Sony Group and IBM Corp. of the US can simultaneously decode 48 SDTV format MPEG-2 streams. At the COOL Chips VIII event held in Yokohama from April 20 to 22, 2005, the company showed a film that had recorded the decoding process.
In the film, 48 MPEG-2 streams stored on a HDD were read, decoded and projected to a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display divided into 8 x 6 cells, each of which showed a different video fitted to the cell size. The company expects the technology to be used to display moving thumbnails in a video list. Of the eight synergistic processor elements (SPE) featured by the Cell, six are used for decoding 48 MPEG-2 streams and one is used for scaling the screen. The remaining SPE can be used for a completely different processing.
In the demonstration, Toshiba used an operating system environment that it had developed to increase efficiency in the Cell software development. One of this environment's key features is that application software developers can program software without concerning about what threads will be allotted to what SPEs, because the environment has a function to automatically schedule software to SPEs.

Unless you are performing a task that doesn't use the SPEs (how often do you do things analogus to decoding 48 MPEG streams similtaneously?).

Think Madden 2006 where those 48 streams equate to individually computing the intentions and motion of the 24 players, plus the jiggling bosoms of another 12 cheerleaders. We know Sony has that tech in work from the DOA series. That leaves 2 SPEs and a PPE to handle all other graphics/gameplay support.

Very impressive, indeed! (even the bit about the 48 SD feeds) If 24 jiggling bossoms isn't a fantastic use of intense physics, I don't know what is!
