ibook slow-down

Hello,

My old 600MHz G3 iBook seems to run very slow these days, despite having max RAM (OS 10.3). It is acting like I would expect a PC to act at this age - slow to react, lots of beachballs.

Could this be because the battery is dying? It only last 2 minutes, which does not matter as I plug it in. But does it slow down when it detects a duff battery? Processor usage is set to max.

Or is it just too old for OSX?

Thanks!

take the battery out - i have a 600MHz G3 iMac and that is still running smoothly - it's a little slow when compared with my PowerBook G4 but god nonetheless. How much RAM do you have - I know it's on MAX? My iMac has 768MB. I'd try a fresh install - either with Tiger or Panther again. This will determine what the problem is - crap on the computer or it's just too old.

If your plugged into the mains I wouln't expect the battery to slow down. Try removing the battery.

    How full is your disk?

    What software is running?

    Any Startup items?

    Huge Desktop size?

Loads of crap on the desktop?

    Try.

    Create a new account.

Check you disk isn't nearly full.

Login to new account. Is it faster?

Make desktop backgroup black (uses less power).

Reformat disk to OS X Extended and reinstall Panther.

Wait 3 days, buy Tiger and reformat and install Tiger.

    Dobby.
