Help! Unable to make .cdr backups of home movie DVDs!

I have always used Disk Utility to make .cdr images of my home movie DVDs. To make backup copies, I simply used disk utility again to burn the image to a new blank DVD.

But now, the menu options have changed all of a sudden. Perhaps a recently downloaded update to the operating system caused this. (Running 10.3.9 now, not sure if I have burned a .cdr since updating to 10.3.9, probably not)

Now all I seem to be able to get are .dmg images. When I insert a blank disk, it says it is burning, and then verifying the DVD. But it either isn't actually burning anything (the disk doesn't appear to have anything on in by visual inspection) or what it does have is not readable by my normal DVD player I have always used for this.

Please help!

P.S.--I'd be glad to include some screenshots of the new menus if someone could direct me how to do that!
