User accounts died, 10.3.9 to blame?? [please help]

The root account on my iMac still works, but the user account I set up for my kids no longer works. I don't think 10.3.9 is to blame, but that is the only change I have made since last accessing the account. I have tried deleting and renewing the account, repairing permissions, running all scripts, etc. When logging in, the iMac hangs on 'Logging In" while the progress bar spins. Using fast user switch, the 'cube' turns to their desktop, but the dock, task-bar and icons don't appear. I end up doing a hard reset to clear the condition. Anyone have a suggestion?

    So creating a new user with the name xxxx doesn't work or just the new user with the same name as the previous one that screwed up?



    You could try deleting the user prefs using terminal and root

    cd /User/whatevertheusernameis/Library/Preferences

    rm -r *
