remote desktop newbie question
please forgive me for asking such a stupid question, i tried searching the forums with no results, but please be patient with me...
my question is,
is there a way to use the internet to connect to my macintosh at home that is constantly connected to the internet? more specifically, is there a way to put my ip address or router ip address into the address line of internet explorer or some other browser program and access my computer's desktop so i might be able to check on the progress projects, and or access files from remote locations? kinda like remote desktop but from any computer with an internet connection?
thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions that you might have
warmest regards,
keats.

At your home computer, go to System Preferences -> Sharing and enable SSH server.
Then you can connect from other computers and get to your files using a SFTP app you install on whatever computer you are using. You can get a decent SFTP app for free.
For Windows you can use this (free): http://www.coreftp.com/
For Mac you can use this (free): http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/
For this to work, obviously, you need to be able to install software on the computer you are using, or it needs to already have a SFTP app installed.
Post more details about the situation and permissions you have and others may be able to help further.
