people have said that they were able to see how long indexing was taking to finish. how is this done? in the preferences there is nothing that shows percentage of data indexed. am i missing something?

If you open the little spotlight box (Command-Space) it will tell you the indexing status. You'll notice that the Magnifying glass will have a dot in it during indexing which goes away when done.

It's all automatic, it does it itself right when you boot.
