Is there a way to turn off dashboard and set it so that the program doesnt turn on during start up? I have no use for this program and do not want it running.

Thanks.
Activate Dashboard and close all of the open widgets.
Drag the Dashboard icon out of the Dock and release.
Open System Preferences -> Expose and Dashboard, and change Dashboard's F12 function key to the null line "---".
hey that was simple enough - should have been smart enough to try to turn off all the widgets! thanks Lundy. I still think that is a weird way to turn off a program in OS X - only other thing in the dock that doesnt have a quit is the Finder.
