Windows guy, looking to buy an Apple this summer.

10.4 just came out. It cost money. 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 are already being talked about. They will be free right? Just an update off the Apple website, like Windows XP SP1/SP2?

Also, can someone point me to a website that lists all the shortcut keys for OS X? I've been using the iMac's at the library for a few weeks now and I'm still pretty slow when it comes to doing anything important.

Thanks

yes, point-releases (the minor updates you're talking about, are free. and also, Tiger is supposed to stick around longer than Panther did, so you will be get your money's worth.

As for keyboard shortcuts, pay attention to the menus when you click items that are often used. For instance, if you go to the menu to save, it will say "(Command)+S" next to 'Save.' So this is a way to get shortcut strokes for those items. For others, look in the keyboard preferences panel.

    Thanks.

One thing I noticed that really bothered me was that I could not key my way up to the menu bar. In Windows, a simple 'alt' stroke will get me up to 'File', 'Edit' etc. so I can navigate with the arrow keys. I couldn't get that to work in OS X. I think I am just confused with the different key names. Is there some way to do it "Windows-style"?

    Thanks again.

not sure about that, but i've learned enough keystrokes that i don't even have to go into the menus to select things. once you learn a broad set of shortcuts, i think you'll find that the menu bar is almost unneeded, and when it is it's faster to just use the mouse rather than hit a button, hit a few more buttons, then hit enter. anyways, sorry i dont have a direct answer to your question. someone else might know it.

To access the menu bar from the keyboard you will need to turn on full keyboard access. To do this go to the system preferences and select Keyboard & Mouse, in this preference pane there will be a button labeled Keyboard Shortcuts. In this tab you can turn on full keyboard access and adjust the shortcut keys. It should be what you are looking for.

In the shortcuts ^ is control, and focus on menu is the shortcut you will generally want to reach menu items from the keyboard without their command key sequences.

Excellent. Thanks! Unfortunately the Keyboard preferences have been disabled for normal user accounts, so I'll have to try it out on my buddies computer...

Thanks though, very informative. I never would have found that out without an unlocked machine, and even then I'd probably give up before I found it.
