Hiya,

As some of you may know, I'm travelling to work in the States this summer. I've decided on Santa Cruz, CA (if anyone has any advice let me know) and I was wondering what is a good value, pay as you go cell phone network. I'd just want it for basic calls and messaging (do Americans use messaging?)

Thanks,

David

Text messaging isn't a big deal here, given the way phone plans work. Last I checked, T-mobile and Cingular/AT&T both offered pre-paid phone packages. T-mobile is basically Deutsche Telekom, so they probably offer more european-style packages. That is, as far as I've been told, the US cell phone business is marketed and handled entirely differently than it is in europe, and both are entirely different than the way it's done in Asia. Go figure.

I'd say that the best networks are probably Verizon and Sprint -- Verizon for overall coverage and network robustness, and Sprint for network performance within it's more limited area -- but T-mobile and Cingular should be fine as long as you're in urban environments, and don't have critical appointments during rush hour and other peak hours.

On a UK-centric note, if anyone is planning to open an account with 3

    not

    should

    network.

I'd put this in 'huge' if I could be bothered.

It's shit. If you can get a line, your call will probably be dropped. The handsets are bollocks and you can't use a 2G handset without your account being suspended. Furthermore, get this, you CAN'T USE YOUR 3G PHONE TO SURF THE WEB.

That's right: you can only use 3 services.

    It's so crap.
