New iMac G5

in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
My dad is itching to get his hands on a new 20' iMac. He lives in a town (Tacoma, Wa) where the only re-seller is CompUSA. I will be doing the install, but will have to travel. To schedule my visit, does anyone know when the new units are expected to arrive for purchase?

Thanks in advance.

Sean

What is there to install? Unless he's transferring info from an existing computer, all that's needed is to plug in and turn on. If he can operate a mouse he can read the registration/setup prompts as well, if that's an issue.

My dad is 75 but a techno infant. I have to set up the wireless system, teach him how to use the new Tiger features, transfer his iTunes, and move the old PC (yup, he's a switcher, and at this age!) out into the basement. Like many, he's a little fearful and wants some help.

That's what having a MacHead son is for!

    {UPDATE}

ComUSA says it will be at least a week, until they sell the remaining previous gen. models until the new ones are available. Other than the Apple Store, has anyone here of when the new iMac G5's will be available in stores? The Seattle stores say it's day to day... Anyone got their hands on one yet?

The Birmingham Apple Store here in the UK said Wed-Fri this week but as it's only been open a short while they wouldn't have ordered many iMacs of the old spec in.

I guess other resellers will be in the following week.

Thorts ... there's an Apple store near you...

I don't remember the name of the mall, but it's right on the interstate up by the SEATAC airport ... has a Rainforest Cafe in it ... a Bahama Breeze outside it ... a Target across the street ... anyhow, there's an Apple Store in that mall.

They may have them in stock right now!

We now have 3 Apple stores here near Seattle, all reporting no stock. They say to call each day, which I'm doing, but they don't know when then will get them in. Hopefully during the upcoming week.

    The saga continues...

I called the Bellevue Apple store yesturday, and they told me that they had some in. I asked that they hold one for me, and the said they would. So picked it up, fought 2.5hr of road repairs to get to my parents, and set up the beautiful new iMac....only to find that it was the previous rev!! So, I packed up back for return.

While I was setting up the old PC with a wireless card, my dad's iBook went out. And the PC couldn't get on line. So my parents went from (briefly) 3 computers to essentially none in a few minutes. I was NOT a happy camper.

So, today I returned the incorrect iMac, and the guy at the Genious Bar diagnosed the iBook as suffering from the old logic board problem (G3 700 Mhz). It's getting reparied and shipped at no cost, and it will be sent directly to my dad!

So after the computer day from hell, things are starting to look up. Impatience has a way of rewarding ya. : p I will finish this yarn went the new iMac is making my dad smile.

Well, the Bellevue Apple store finally got some of the new G5 iMacs in on Thursday, and they called me and keep one aside for me. I picked it up, told them my story, and they knocked $100 off and threw in a wireless keyboard and mouse for my trouble!

Since then my dad has been getting disconnected from his previously installed home wireless network with each sleep/shut down cycle. So today he called Apple and they walked him through fixing it. With the 1 Gig Ram stick from Crucial, this machine screams.

So, my ten year fantasy of getting my parents completely converted over from a PC to the Mac platform has finally come true. Time to get a new fantasy : p

    Thank you, Apple!

    And thanks for reading.

Wow.. Apple service at it's best.

I also had the problem of my Airport card not re-connecting on wakeup. Often it would take several tries at entering the password manually before it would re-connect. Then when I installed the latest security update the problem dissapeared.

I'd love to know what Apple's solution was though, as when I rang Applecare up they said it was a problem with the router (a NetgearDG834G) so they couldn't help me. There's quite a few people on Apples own forum complaining about this issue.

    Proxy,

I don't know what was done. My father was walked through the proceedure by a 'specialist' on the subject over the phone. They apparently deleted the old setting for the named home network and changed some settings, but my dad couldn't show me all the changes (him being non-computer savy). Try talking to Apple again.

The iMac is so fast now....web pages appear almost instantaneously (and this on an old Snow basestation).

My thanks again to Apple. My folks are *very* happy now.

Maybe I can get my dad in one of those switcher adds : )
