SuperDrive and DVD 8x media
I have a somewhat old iMac (800MHz, Luxo Jr.) with a SuperDrive (Pioneer, DVR-104, firmware updated). I have no problem with DVD 4x media (except Kodak) although I have to burn them at 1x speed. So, when the stores stop selling 2x media, I've got no problem. However, now 4x media are increasingly hard to find (or they are in 5-packs which are expensive) and pretty much all stores are selling 25-pack DVD 8x media. The problem is, I tried several brands with no success at all. The only brand that finished burning and passed verification was Memorex (1 out of 3), but that data DVD failed to mount afterward. Counting that as a failure, that makes it 100% failure though DVD 8x media are advertised as compatible with 1x burning!
Are there people with similar problems with DVD 8x media? If successful, what brand do you use or any other burning software/firmware you run? Or has my 3 year old SD obsolete already?
BTW, I used Toast to burn DVDs.

A computer is just for Christmas - not for life.
3 years of service from any piece of computing kit is pretty good going.
If the worst comes to the worst, you can replace or augment your existing drive with a new SD. You can purchase a Pioneer DVR-109 mechanism fairly cheaply these days. If you aren't happy about opening up your iMac, and you don't need iDVD support, then simply pop this new SD drive in to an external FireWire enclosure. As long as you can use a screwdriver, you shouldn't have any worries!*
I can purchase a DVR-109 and an external FW case in the UK for £53 - which means that if you're in the States, you'll probably be able to pick them up for $53.
How much are you paying for the older DVD media.
*I assume you're running OS X 10.2, 10.3 or 10.4?

Well, I actually expect a longer service than that because I am not talking about stressing the computer with new stuff that needs more power, like HD videos for example. It's because of the promise of compatibility with the higher rated media. Had they made it clear that compatibility was an potential issue from the get go, I'd just suck it up without complains.

That is certainly an option I may have to consider if there is no other way. I am just wondering if many other people experienced the same thing and if they found a solution to it.

5-pack 4x DVDs cost CAN$ 8 while a 25-pack 8x DVD spindle costs CAN$ 13 on sale. That's about 3x the cost/disk, if they continue to be available.
