I have heard the rumor... Apple making a program to rival Photoshop in the same way Final Cut did Premier... Is it true? What do we know about it? Could this be the reason we have not seen or heard from Photoshop? Is it possible that iPicture is a joint project of Apple and Adobe?



What are our thoughts people?

I highly doubt Adobe will help make a competing program for Photoshop.



OTOH, I think there's a 99% chance Apple will come out with something like Photoshop, and probably even better. iPhoto and Photo Studio Pro, maybe?

As I understand it, Premier was lagging, so Apple was moving into a product space where the only major contender was suffering from benign neglect.



Photoshop is not suffering from benign neglect, as far as I can tell. Adobe has said that they plan to have all their apps running on OS X within six months.

I would say iPhoto would be compared more to Graphic Converter. Heh there is no way They are going to make Photoshop replacement and give it away.

Yes, iPhoto would have to be a much, much lesser product that Photoshop. Like iMovie is to Final Cut Pro.

Yeah, it would be a Photoshop Elements type of app. Like Kai's Photo Soap or something: aimed at home users, consumers, students, hobbyists, soccer moms with a new digital camera, etc.



Just a simple, cool iApp (in the tradition of iTunes and iMovie) that let the average schmo crop photos, remove red-eye, perform basic effects and retouching, change to grayscale, sepia tone, add a frame or border, add some type, etc.



Would hardly step on Photoshop's toes...it would be for the most simple tasks, but with the ease of use and nice, snazzy interface as the other iApps and a nice little addition to the stable.



I could see something like that. Either totally free (and included on the OS) or maybe something like $49.

Anybody ever use Kai's Photo Soap?



There's a perfect example of an application that for the most part is targetted at home users, but doesn't at all threaten those of us who would and do use Photoshop. It's got a nice interface, it has little albums, you can import directly from your scanner or camera, you can remove red-eye and other blemishes, add text or frames or effects or add clip-art-type things, print or save (maybe email) photos. iPhoto could do all of that, and you could maybe make screensavers and have it all integrated with iCards and iDisk and your iTools HomePage and stuff, and you could burn PhotoCDs or photo DVDs or something. Plus it could be integrated with an online photo-printing solution.

Well... I have a theory about iphoto beeing a root to the dispute between Adobe and Apple earlier this year...

The product iPhoto was confirmed as a topic in scheduled Apple seminars this summer.

I suspect it got pulled by Apple to please Adobe and ensure that the carbonization of photoshop didn't "slowdown"...

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it confirmed that iPhoto was another companies product? I think the seminar was actually for "iPhoto Studio" and "Studio in a Bag".



Also, if you poke around the U.S. patent database you'll see that Apple trademarked the name "iPicture". The description is really interesting actually.

Willoughby is correct about iPhoto and Studio in a Bag. MacNN reported on it and "revealed" that they are not from Apple and nothing more than a third-party suite of software using the 'i' moniker.

ummm, maybe an addition to iTools? Image Capture grabs your pics and you log into iPhoto which would be an online photo editing proggie or suite (3rd party) and edit your photos. Then transfer them over to your web site on mac.com?



Perculiar about the online app-wonder if Apple is pulling a .Net thing here and offering apps online? Even if 3rd party...
