EDIT:
discovered any device plugged into one of the USB ports of my Apple 17" LCD is the culprit. ( never used to be)
Anyone have any comment on this. - the other port ( which as keyboard seems to be ok.
I tried a complete new installation of OSX on another drive and this didnt fix things.
another EDIT:
Moved keyboard to errant port and that was no problem so reverted to originial setup and now is working
