Calling all 30" display users

I'm thinking about purchasing a 30" display, but short of buying a couple of plane tickets to London, there's little chance of me actually seeing one in the flesh before I plonk down the money...

...none of the local dealers stock the 23"er, never mind the 30"er.

So, I'd be interested to hear from anybody that has a 30" display. What are your views of the display now that you initial impressions have worn off? Is a display that size worth the money, or is it overkill? Is it too large for you field of view, or do you get used to it really quickly?

I'll mainly be doing graphic design for print, and the idea of being able to do alts at actual size (not 100%) with all the palettes called up, appeals to me.

I'd be interested to hear your opinions...

A friend of mine got one, and says he would never switch back to anything smaller, though it took a while to get used to in the beginning (so many pixels!)

If it's worth it to you business-wise, go for it! I wouldn't recommend it if you can't justify the cost though.

Ditto on what Robin Hood said. It's a strange and wonderful monitor ? too big for anyone but a graphic designer / audio / multimedia maven, but a tad small as a "large screen" viewing device for an assembled audience.

I probably sound spoiled saying this, but I honestly think I might prefer two 23-inch displays to my 30. It's a beautiful piece of kit, as the Brits say, but I would rather have more horizontal space and a bit less less vertical. I feel like I'm using only about two-thirds of the height in order to keep things in my field of view. And it's a long scroll from the menu bar to the Dock! I think a 27-inch or so, with a second smaller display, would be perfect.

(This is why I discount these reports of 42-inch displays. Unless you're using it as a television as well, I think the 30 is already hitting the upper limit of how much vertical space you can use without bobbing your head up and down all day long.)

Apart from that, it's an amazing thing. Incredibly bright and sharp, and beautiful color. I ran a pixel-check app and can't even find any dead pixels. I bought the ATI X800 card to run mine and I'm very happy with that.

Yes, I wondered about that. I seem to remember reading somewhere that 25" was the upper limit, anything above that and you had to move the display backwards so that it remained in your field of view ? and then you ran the risk of squinting.

I had noticed that you can purchase two 23" screens for the same price as a single 30"er (and you don't have to purchase the 6800 as well).

    Mmmmm...

You also seem to get a damn site more screen real estate going for two 23" as opposed to a single 30" - 4,608,000 vs. 4,096,000 (about 12.5%), but by the same rationale, you can now puchase four of the 20" displays ffor the same price as a single 30" display, and get a whopping 7,056,000 pixels!
