I haven't needed to use Adobe Streamline in years and years...

all of a sudden, I do.

I read that AS is compatible through Classic, but I dont have Classic right now.

Any alternatives you can recommend?

Flash can convert raster to vector. If you have it you might give it a whirl and see if it works for you. THat's what I've used in recent years.

Illustrator CS2 has it build in, as in the previous versions. But AI CS2 seems to have a much more powerfull tracer. Didn't try it myself, though. Experiences, anyone ?

Aside from the ones mentioned already, Freehand MX has the Trace Tool that vectorises raster images.

There's also an app called Silhouette that's dedicated to converting bitmaps to vector. Comes as an Illustrator plug-in or stand alone application:

.. costs between $179 and $359, depending on the version (lite, pro, or plug-in), so you'd probably be better off using Flash, Illustrator or Freehand unless vectorisation is a major part of your work.

ah crap.. I'll actually have to give Illustrator a run then.

What I want to do is take a photograph of an old wall that has lots of stones and have a sort of architectural composition of it. Like the ones that archaeologist's make of a site... drawn out, etc.

it came to mind because I was playing around with some filters (Crayon/Graphic Pen, etc) and it almost worked. Nontheless, I'd really like to make a good plan.

How do I start in illustrator?

So, as an example (not my pic, but similar)
