Does the dual 2.0 powermac g5 have 4 dimms or 8 dimms? I was looking on the crucial memory website for memory upgrades and it says there is a 4 dimm and 8 dimm model?? On the apple site the memory upgrade for the dual 2.0 shows it shows a 4x1gb but thats only 4 dimms......im just confused...anyone know what the deal is?Thanks

It depends on which one you are talking about:

    Rev A & B have 8.

    Rev C has 4.

Rev A from June 2003 to June 2004

Rev B from June 2004 to April 2005

    Rev C from April 2005 to .....

So if you are getting it new from Apple it is going to be a Rev C (4 RAM slots).

In the PM G5 series the top and middle model have always had 8 RAM slots and the bottom one has had 4 slots.

The dual 2.0 in Rev A was the top of the line, in Rev B it was the middle model and now it is the bottom model.

The 4 slots only limits you in that you have to install RAM in pairs. So you fill up the slots 2 at a time.

My rev A G5 2x2.0 has 8 slots as mentioned by Londor, 4 of which are filled. I have two 256s, the stock RAM from Apple, and two 512s, upgrades purchased from Crucial. The total of 1.5 GB has served me well.

Since RAM is fairly cheap -- $100 for a pair of 512s -- I may bump myself up to 2.5 GB by adding another pair. However, if I only had four slots, I'd probably play it differently. I'm debating to myself if I'd replace the 256s with 1 GB sticks or just 512s. Having extra memory laying around usually bothers me, but so does replacing memory with something that is only marginally larger.

What are you going to use the machine for? I use mine for games, programming, some graphics/video, and all the usual iLife / productivity apps. 1.5 GB has served me well.
