okay, not sure where this goes... maybe genius bar? anyway...

i just reinstalled my home computer, BUT forgot to deauthorize the computer before i did so. kept my songs, but discarded the itunes preferences file, so itunes wanted me to authorize the computer before playing my itunes-purchased songs. does this mean i have accidentally "used up" one of the five computers on which i am allowed to play the songs?

thanks for any help/knowledge...

You can deauthorize a computer that's no longer functioning, sold, stolen, etc. by filling out this form.

I had to do this for my PowerBook that I killed.

    Good luck.

actually, you put me ont he right track... apparently apple has built in an option for those (like me) who lose track of how many computers they have authorized, or, in my case, have multiple authorizations on the same computer, and need to get back to good ol' "tabula rasa." there is a hidden "deauthorize all" option in the account area, which will deauthorize all computers that have been registered with your account. this "nuclear option" can only be done once per year, so once you press that button, make sure you keep better track the next time around.

personally, i hate the whole authorizing computer thing, because i usually forget to deauthorize, and then have to do the whole hoop-jumping to get it fixed. ugh.

This doesn't seem to work in the UK.
