Recording & Burning TV Programming
I've questions about some of the hardware out there that makes it possible to record and burn TV programs. I'm thinking specifically of devices like EyeTV, Plextor ConvertX, and ReplayTV (using DVArchive). I'm trying to sort out the role each of these devices might play in a home system.
I am replacing an old Wintel PC with a 20" iMac G5 (2 Gb RAM, 250 HD). I would like to be able to use my Mac to record and burn TV programs. I know I'll need one of the devices mentioned above, but which one?
An EyeTV Wonder costs about $250 (including Toast 6.0), the ConvertX costs about $330 (including Toast), and the ReplayTV costs about $400 (including lifetime service activation). The most economical choice is the EyeTV Wonder. But I can't help wonder if I would miss out on some desirable capability that either the ConvertX or ReplayTV could deliver. Elgato sells both the EyeTV and the ConvertX. Why?
Obviously I'm confused about capabilities so any helpful explanations would be appreciated.

EyeTV is a small box and the software has a simple user interface and lots of features. It can automatically start up your computer to record a show. You can export to whatever formats Quicktime supports, and if you are a geek, you have direct access to the actual media files.
The Plextor ConvertX is basically the same thing as the PC version, but bundled with the EyeTV PVR software. That's why the sell them likewise with the ATI device.
The EyeTV200 and ConvertX offer the same thing but from different companies. The EyeTV is firewire and the Plextor is USB2.
ReplayTV is a standalone player that does not need a computer to operate. It does require activation, but from what I hear, the program guide is great. I don't actually have one, but a family member does and they like it a lot.
Ease of use... it is a draw. That is up to you. Both elgato and Replay TV offer very good products.
If you want easy access or manipulate your files, EyeTV is the way to go since they record to a directory your specify right there on your computer.
If you have a spare and Mac, look into the ReplayTV. (Wired to TV and networked to the mac to cover your bases.)
I'm assuming that an EyeTV would be connected in series between my satelite box (via coax) and my iMac (via Firewire). With my iMac on one side of the room and my satelite box on the other, I guess this means a long Firewire cable, right? Or is there such a thing as wireless Firewire. The rev B iMacs come with Bluetooth and Airport Extreme. Maybe one of these would be the answer.
EyeTV doesn't have an activation fee, right?
Which is better for video recording, the USB or Firewire interface?
And finally, if I bought a ReplayTV device, what role do the USB and Ethernet connectors play?
Thanks so much for your help.
