First time Mac user with question...

I just received my iMac G5 yesterday, and I'm loving it so far. I have been a PC user my whole life (I'm 28), so it's going to take some time to get use to the navigation. My question is this...I put a cd in the superdrive, and played it for about 30 minutes tops. When I ejected the disc, I found that the disc was extremely hot. It wasn't just warm like I am used to from other drives, this disc was damned hot.

Is this something I should be worried about? Is this normal for an iMac G5? Any replies are much appreciated.

It could just be the warmth of the G5 in there warming things up. I would call the Apple tech support. They are the best at tech support of all computer companies, per consumer reports. Good luck, and let us know of your response.

Guess it depends on your definition of hot but yes when you pull it out it usually is warm.

For whatever reason, I want to say CDs are supposed to withstand heats of 140 degrees F (that's 60 degrees C). Take a thin meat thermometer and carefully stick it in the drive slot after taking out a CD. Check the temperature. If the internal temperature is anywhere near that, call Apple. Of course, be careful sticking a metal probe into a computer. Take a peak in the slot first with a flash light. (Of course you might not even be able to fit a probe into the slot. I'm not familiar with the exact size of the drive slot.)

Alternately, if you have one of those awesome temerature-sensing laser guns, just point it down into the comptuer and check its temperature. No probe, not problem.

You can tell a 60 degree metal object by touch. You can't touch a 60 degree pipe without immediately needing to pull your hand away immediately. It's one of the very crude ways to get an idea of temperature.

the cd's usually have a warm warm sometimes but usually warm feel to them when they're taken out... when i've played dvd's, i havnt payed attention to the amount of heatness it gives off.. but if you think its too hot for the superdrive to be making, even w/ the G5, give apple support a call. they'll answer any questions you may have

thats what happened to me when i bought my g3 imac (a few weeks before the 1st g4 imac came out) i put a disc in and that sucker came out nice and hot, (and i kept getting that spinning beachball thing after awhile) its one of the reasons i took it back to circuit city. but the mac in general and mac os x was great.

The G5 in the iMac can get quite toasty. Almost too hot to touch if you have opened it up and touched the "G5 plate," you know exactly what I am talking about. I was a little surprised by this. I wonder how this impacts on the other internal components in the computer long term?
