What's up with Logic?

I'm ready to purchase Logic Express, but something isn't right. The latest version is 7.1 but to get it I must purchase 7.0 for $300 and also buy the 7.0 to 7.1 upgrade for $20. The same is true for Logic Pro, at a higher price. I called the Apple store to check this out when I didn't see the right version for Logic at Apple's on-line store.

Maybe I'm ignorant about business practice, but I believe new purchases should receive the latest version software. If Apple does not have 7.1 on optical disks yet, I should get the upgrade disk free with my purchase. If Apple wishes to raise the price, that is their right, but the way it is being handled seems strange.

I will put off my purchase for now, but I'd like to know whether such a practice is common?

I purchased Logic 7.0 back in Feb/March time frame. After Apple released 7.1, I thought I'd get a free upgrade... I was wrong. I had to purchase the $19 disk. I kind of understand their reasoning, but I still wasn't happy about it.

For your situation, I would expect to get 7.1 from the start, not have to purchase the upgrade also. That seems kind of weird.

I guess I misinterpreted what is happening here, but it doesn't change my opinion very much. Here is the situation as I see it now:

The 7.1 updates to Logic Pro and Express are free. It's just that Apple charges $20 whenever an optical disk is sent. The same is true of the "free" upgrade to OS X when someone buys a new Mac within a short period before announcement of a new OS. It cost $20. It's my opinion that customers would be far happier if their "free" updates and upgrades cost only $10, however.

I also noticed that the Logic 7.1 disk is called an update, not upgrade. The last actual upgrade to Logic Express was version 6 to 7, which cost $100. That fact should have given me a clue to what is happening.

So I understand the situation better now, but my original conclusion is still valid. The 7.1 update disk should be sent along with any order for Logic Pro or Express. The precedent is set in the way Apple handles OS X upgrades. After a new version of OS X is announced, an upgrade CD is sent along with purchases of new Mac computers, until Macs are shipping with the proper OS installed.
