Programming on the Mac

Soon I will have a few hours spare per day and wanted to get a start in programming so that one day I could tackle some ideas I had kicking around. I have no idea of what I am capable of but need a start. My only previous limited experience was a LONG time ago

1. Basic on C64

2. AMOS on Amiga for game content (Suped-up Basic with Compiler for games)

3. Assembly on Amgia to fix issues I had with Sprite Collision Detection(remember that word ) - sort of fun... just very involved

4. Pascal in high-school that I paid scant attention to as it was too easy and I was involved in some way with some of the fairer sex in my class

So starting from scratch I need a real start. I've had a few peeps in my line of work mention C++, Obj-C and Java... although I understand that Cocoa on OS X seems the logical choice/extension.

Help, input, resources and opinions would be appreciated.

P.S. Not sure if this is a Genius Bar subject so will post on General also. If it is not General, feel free to delete this post from there Admins.

Cheers
