Nokia is working on a GTK+ port of the WebCore engine (a heavily modified KTHML). It is actually available for download here.

I suspect they just want to licence the UI of Safari as it's arguably the best browser UI around.

The WebCore is available for download to anyone, anywhere. They already have the WebCore.

Nokia has been working on a port* of WebCore, JavaScriptCore and WebKit for over half a year. Note that up until recently, WebKit wasn't open source, therefore Nokia must have had relations with Apple.

This doesn't mean that Nokia's browser will be Safari-based.

*) After all, WebKit is Cocoa-specific, whereas Nokia uses Gtk+.

I agree, but Nokia is known to have licenced browser from others to use in their phones. re: Opera.

The Register says that they will 'cooperate'.

And it says that this will lead more sites being developed with Safari/KTHML in mind, thus leading to better compatibility. Hopefully, it's gonna be good.

Yes, but Opera develops versions specific to embedded devices. Apple is unlikely to develop Safari (or any browser, for that matter) for anything except for desktops and laptops running OS X.

    Otherwise, agreed.

Is it possible then that Apple is now seeking a new partner instead of Motorolla in their foray into mobiles. This could be a start of something else, if it's only just a port of webcore to Symbian OS, why bother with a press release, are they testing the water for reactions?

Series 60 and 90 have huge installed base, compared to Motorolla, Quicktime for mobiles would take the edge off Real dominance, and iTunes is only logical
