Outlook Express v.X

Any word on it?



Has Microsoft given up working on the free Mac e-mail client? It wouldn't surprise me if they did and decided to start making people buy Office to get the full-featured Entourage.



OT: wtf were they thinking when they named it Entourage? Why couldn't they stick with "Outlook" so Windows users aren't confused when they hear about "Entourage" on the Mac? Oh well. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    I think it had to do with support for Microsoft Exchange Server which Entourage 2001 didnt have, so they couldnt really call it Outlook. Later they released Outlook for OS9, but it was only for Exchange Server and nothing more. Too bad they dont get with the program... Oh well, Im sure its a good piece of software anyway. When I get a new iMac sometime next year Ill get OfficeX, Im no fan of Mail

    Actually Entourage is a crippled version of Wintel Outlook. Outlook does Exchange Server mail, and POP mail, as well as PIM stuff for workgroups, i.e. group calendaring, shared appointments etc. It would be nice if MS actually included Outlook in the Mac version of Office.

    Sorry Tonton, but thats not true. I have Outlook 2000 (Windows) configured to check my POP mail and it works perfectly (in the limits of MS technology that is).

    You have to have Outlook Express installed to check POP from Outlook. Try uninstalling OE and then see if checking POP mail from Outlook still works. No go.



    I have no clue how it works that way, I don't like Outlook at all.



    "Outlook", that is one weird word. Read it about 10 times and focus on it. Weird. (I swear I'm not high)

    I used Outlook 2000 (Windows) at work until recently ... I thought it was pretty slick. The networked scheduling functions looked pretty cool (not that we actually used them much).



    Then I changed jobs last month, and now I use ... Novell GroupWise. (shudder) It's like going back to the Dark Ages.



    Back on topic ... OS X already comes with a free e-mail program. What would Microsoft have to gain by bringing OE to X?

    I have it at home and I definetly dont have an Exchange server... just a normal cable connection.



    Then again, I do also have Outlook Express installed (its on there by default... damn Windows... installs crap everywhere) so I can't confirm if Outlook will work without OE installed to check POP mail. Don't see why not though.



    I have Outlook97 at work here and there is no POP, thats for sure.



    WHY make a carbonized OE? Well, what other free email client can you use to check your hotmail account with? And, to be honest, Mail.app is just ok... its not that great. Just an 'average' app

    The free Mail client that ships with OSX isn't as good as Outlook Express, it has problems with attachments and so on. I'd prefer to use OE in OSX. Entourage has too many features I wouldn't use... I can't live without my complex IE rules!

    It's not that difficult:

    Outlook = Microsoft Exchange Email Client (Mac & Windows)

    Outlook Express = Free Email Client (Mac & Windows)

    Control Panels -&gt; Add/Remove Programs -&gt; Outlook Express



    Uninstall it. Try and check your mail from Outlook, tell me what happens.



    You *can* confirm it if you like.

    I hope that Entourage is a form of Outlook Express that the dunder heads at AT&T Broadband will accept. I haven't had email since Excite pulled the plug ( I was using OS X 's mail app ). AT&T said that they don't support OS X or their mail app. They only support IE and Outlook in 9.x.



    I've tried reconfiguring the OS X mail app but it still doesn't work. The " tech support " guy on the phone said he didn't know if Entourage in X ( I just got Office x ) would work. Also they might be able to try to help me with the OS X app but, they might have to charge me $ 30.00 or so!
