Would it be a good/bad idea for Apple to release a Mac-only "killer game" (killer, as in "very good"), in order to attract PC/console gamers?

An impressive game that would show off the capacity of the Mac (sort of).

Microsoft did buy Bungie to get Halo for the X-Box, and well, you know what I mean..

So what do you think?

Nope, bad idea. What makes apples apps so great is there easy of use and inivative uses. You can not do that in a game. Games and apps are toatly diffent areans. Apple should not start working in both. It would only make PC users look up,roll there eyes, and go back to counterstike.

This is random, but why is it so friggin hard to port Counterstrike?? I don't see how the code is any more difficult than Castle Wolfenstein. OR does the company just not like Macs?

The code is constantly tweaked for performance. There simply isn't enough demand in the Mac market to cover this expense. And it's not like many Macs even come with powerful enough video cards to play it in the first place.

Counterstrike is based on the Quake 2 engine in half-life. It doesn't require a powerful video card, and runs just fine on a P2-400 with a Rage Pro. It's not a question of CS running on a mac, but of Half Life. Unfortunately, Sierra cancelled the port about a year ago (?).

The Mac has more than enough power to run HL and CS.

How many Killer games have been on the PC that never made it to the Mac? Many. Every time one is not released on the Mac does it cause mass deffection from mac gamers? Nope, they just play the killer ones that have been released.

Consider also the sheer volume of games on the PC. Most PC gamers probably don't play most great games simply because they have so many they can't play them all.

Making a "Killer" game excusive to a platform may work for Consoles but not for Computers. Why? Let's look at Halo. Many Gamers out there were waiting to buy their next gen console. Some bought the PS 2 but it's now a year old & they can buy the X-box & not hurt the pocket book to much. So why can't they buy a if it's been a year since they bought thier PC? Easy, they probably sunk around $1000 into a nice gaming setup. Now a year later your saying buy this computer so you can play this one exclusive game (not even these exclusive games, just this one). So what type of Mac? An iMac? No way to poor performance for a Gamer. They'd have to buy a $1699 G4 + say a SBL:Mac & some ram.

So let's look at it again:

    First Year

    PS2-$300

    PC-$1000

    Second Year

    XBox-$300

    PMG4-$1800

All of the sudden that's a lot of money to spend for a "Killer" game don't you think? Again, it's something that can work in the console market because consoles are (relatively) cheap. Not going to fly for PC gamers (especially since they'd probably get comparable fps on their $1000 (year old) PC as they'd get on their new $1800 PM G4
