iMovie 3

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't iMovie 2 come out at MacWorld July 2000? I think its time for a new version.



However, I can only think of one or two new features that wouldn't take away from the simplicity of the current application.



The only thing that bugs me about the current version is audio. I think they could make a simple audio editing interface inside iMovie. Something that would just allow me to cut/edit the soundtrack or add as many sound tracks as I want. Just being able to fade in and out seems like its not enough.



The only problem is, I think I remember beta testers talking about iMovie 2 before it was release and I haven't heard a peep about iMovie 3. Maybe its not coming?

iMovie has gone the route of most Apple products (iTunes, iDVD, FCP, iMac, iBook, etc.). It's was good at its inception, and nearly perfect after the second generation. All Apple can do now is make it faster, and work out whatever kinks still exist.

I was just talking about this in another thread, but it is about thime that Apple added MPEG2 support to QT pro - and therefore to all of its relations - iMovie/iDVD etc.



maybe this could be the catylst for an upgrade to iMovie etal.

There was a thread awhile back where we were saying titles could be smoother, as well.

I would have to agree that titles could be a lot smoother. I have noticed this several times before and couldn't figure out why they looked jittery. They could also smooth the text more.



More options for titles would be nice too, glow effects, shadows?



The audio editor idea is great as well. Or at least something more sophisticated then what is already in there.



I have noticed that the compression from iMovie is not all that great either. I am not a professional so I do not know if this could be improved, but if it is possible then I would definitely incorporate it.



With the introduction of FP3, I would suspect that iMovie 3 would be released soon, within six months or so at least.



Would anybody else want a true Aqua UI instead of the brushed aluminum look. Personal I would rather not have any apps with the brushed aluminum and have then all Aqua.

I just wish iMovie didn't waste so much space with those damn stripes. I swear half my screen in iMovie is basically blank because the "work areas" in iMovie don't resize to fit anything bigger than 1024x768.

I think we'll see it soon. With support for the new OfflineRT format, so people can store more footage on their hard drives.

I agree with posters above:



iMovie 3 will take advantage of many of the features offered in Final Cut Pro 3, including real-time effects, etc. and offline editing mode. Obviously it will take advantage of the new features of QT 6, whatever those may be.



I can't wait!

Yeah, currently there is no other free editing solution that comes close to iMovie. The only thing I could ask for is for it work with Photoshop and After Effects. If they gave it this and some Final Cut Pro like enhancements, Apple would have a very nice prosumer application. Another reason to buy a mac. Free professional editing software.

The only thing I think about when I launch iMovie in OS X is how it has to hide the Dock because its current layout. (It seems to me that the layout was designed this way because, at least in OS 9, it took most of your computing horsepower to edit those movies, making multitasking a bit harder.) A refreshed layout for Dock inclusion would be nice. Seems to me that these shelves and tabs could become drawers.

What I'd like to have (besides the aforementioned audio enhancements) is the ability to make In and Out points in the clips and timeline. It bugs the hell out of me that I have to split the clips to get just the right segment I want.



Or did I miss something? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I agree with the above comment.



As for audio, it's long been rumored (and there's a thread in this forum stating) that Apple's been working on some kind of consumer/pro MIDI/Audio editing software as they've been doing with iMovie/FCP, iDVD/DVD Studio . . . could be the reason iTunes' name was changed from iMusic (if we all remember that). Anyways, giving that new app some compatibility with iMovie would be wonderful - record or mix and add your own music to your iMovies!

In iMovie 2, if you move your mouse pointer to just below the timeline in the player window, little 'ghosted' triangles will appear. Then as you click and drag, the triangles separate and you create a selection on the timeline. You can get rid of what is not selected with the Edit:Crop command.



Very useful feature, but hugely unintuitive, as the triangles don't always appear, sometimes you have to move your mouse back and forth to get them showing - madness, and coming from a company known for GUI excellence.... I hope it's fixed in iMovie 3.
