Apple are now offering the X850 gpu as a bto option for their Powermac line.

Good news to see this is available- is a great card!

BUT... ofcourse due to my luck... was waiting for this to be an option for sometime, though gave up and ordered a 2.3 with a nvidia6800 not long ago- and it should be arriving in the next few days. And now Apple starts offering the card I was waiting for, just now.

GRRRRR>>>> so typical. Maybe am over reacting, but I waited and waited for PCI-express and apple to offer the latest ATI card as BTO. But nothing, so gave up.

wow, i'm impressed. i wasn't expecting them to release the X850, i was expecting at best the X800. not a huge difference, but surprising none the less. its nice to finally have the top-of-the-line ATI card after so long. the only downside i can see with this card is the lack of a second DVI port. having only a DVI port and an ADC port, it kind of limits the possibilities of some professionals. on the upside, the specs that apple lists are impressive. 8 billion pixels/sec vs the 1.3 billion on the 9600 and 5.6 billion on the 6800 GT. the X850 uses only 1 slot, too, so a lot of people are gonna be happy with that. god, now if only i had a nice computer so i could upgrade. *tear* if i get a PM in the next few years, especially when the mactels premiere, i'm DEFINITELY upgrading.

I ordered a G5 two days ago on the 28th - the first day the new ATI became available. Here's the specs.

    2.7 GHz

    400 GB HD

1 GB RAM (+2 GB from another source)

    ATI X850 XT

Needless to say, I can't wait for it to arrive. The computers I currently use are a Beige with G4 @ 541MHz (plus many other upgrades) and a Pismo, so I haven't been anywhere near top of the line for years.

I'm thinking about maybe doing some benchmarks when it arrives next week, but I don't really have any games yet to test it with (although I might by then or soon after). Maybe there are other options for testing. Something available for free?

I'm really stoked they came out with this card. I would much rather have this ATI card than the NVidia card. I just sold my pc and have $2500 now... dual 2.3 with x850xt is 2259 (minus superdrive) with dev discount... not bad.

    This changes everything for me.

Looks like the x850 took the place of the 6800 Ultra. They only have the 6800GT DDL.

The America's Army game is available for Mac, and is free. It simply doesn't tax my stock dual 2.5 at all, even at 1600x1200, so it's not much of a good load test.

Get the Doom 3 demo whenever that comes out (should be in a few weeks or sooner)
