iBook flickering / black screen

I bought one o' those G3 800 mHz iBook 14 inchers a while back. Up until recently it's been fine but suddenly it's sterted getting very hot (bottom left quarter) and the screen flickers then goes completely blank. If I press the bottom left of the ibook it maks a scrunchy noise and - sometimes - comes back on, but has frozen. Is it jiggered or is there something I could have a wee stab at if I open it up?

Thank you

I had a similar issue with my 12" iBook - If I picked it up by the left corner, the screen would go black. This would also sometimes happen when I opened it up when it was sleeping.

It turned out to be bad RAM. I got a new 1Gig stick of RAM and now no more black screen.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your problem, but if you have extra RAM in your iBook, try removing it and see if you still have the issue.

iBooks of that vintage had GFX chip detachment problems.

Might want to search on the net.

is the problem fixed? because my friend had a g3 ibook and he had similar issues as you. he had it sent in several times, and it turned out to be the logic board problem that plagued g3 ibooks for a while. the logic board is/was located underneath trackpad and the area that you rest your hands while typing, so many of the boards went bad from pressure and such. you may want to check that out. go to apple.com and at the bottom, there is a link that says "extended ibook logic board repair program" or something to that effect. that may give you a better look into the problem. if that is the true source of the problem, they'll fix it for free (or at least they should). hopefully that helps!

Thanks for that. I'll gie that a try tomorrow. It sounds identical tae what I think has happened tae mine. I had the habit of lifting it up by the corner.

    Very helpful advice.

If there's an AirPort card in there, remove that also for troubleshooting.
