    I think not.

But you could easily convert them to QT and edit in FCP. Avi files with some codecs can be converted lossless into QT, and back.

    I think its:

    DV

    Indeo video

    none

    divx

They lose a little clairity. I've been playing with it in iMovie. FCP for some reason takes far too long to export into QT Moov. I may have to upgrade, but I would prefer to stitch them together as they are in divix-avi format.

    Hi,

    SimpleMovieX can do this.

After editing, you can save your file back in AVI format with re-compressing.

You can also merge several AVI files.

Note that I'm the developer of this app.

AVI doesn't support in-place editing. Any app that pretends to do it is either bound to cause incompatibilities with other AVI players, or is modifying the files more than it claims to.

What I do with AVIs is edit them in Quicktime and save as .mov. I tried SimpleMovieX (it leaves big temp files around) and the apps that split the files like D-vision and explicit but as Chucker said, I don't think AVIs are meant to be split because like mpegs, they don't seem to support frame accurate editing so you get artifacts at the break point. One thing you might want to try is mpeg streamclip, which has a save as AVI option. Just edit the file in Quicktime (assuming you have the pro version), open the movie in streamclip and then save as AVI. There's no real advantage to using AVI though, they are both just containers and .mov is the better of the two.

What's the secret step I'm missing to import an AVI into QT?

Maybe I'm just dense, but any time I've ever tried to import into QT (or QT Pro), I get a dialog box about certain components missing and it sends me to a URL where QT components are available -- but none of them say anything about AVI.

I have the same problem. I just want to edit a simple avi clip (truncate it) and maintain quality. Tried iMovie and SimpleMovieX, both degrade the image badly.

heck, my camera can do this, why can't I find some software to do the same. Maybe I can figure out how to move the clip back into my (still) camera a do it there! But seems silly.

Do yourself a favor and install Perian. That should get QT working with most AVIs.

Some topics take a long time for the right answer to come along.

BTW, I can load the AVI videos into QT Pro, but they always save at like 5x the AVI size. And even if I truncate the video in QT Pro, it doesn't recover any space. Something's not right there.
