ipod: cross-platform hard drive?

in iPod + iTunes + AppleTV edited January 2014
this may be a dumb question...or an obvious one that i didnt do enough research on....but i have a mac at home and i use a pc at work...should my [apple configured] ipod work as a usb hard disk to take files off the pc to bring home to the mac...my pc at work will charge the ipod...and recognizes it as a usb hard disk...but it wont allow me to view it as such....

    I use Xplay to view and manage my Mac formatted iPod on my Windows PC at work. It lets me do pretty much everything I need.

    if you format an ipod on a windows PC it will work with no problems on the mac as well.
