you can watch DVDs from any region without worrying about that setting.
another trick is to use a program called MacTheRipper to copy the DVD to your hard disk, then watch the DVD off your hard disk, this way you don't have to worry about DVD region counter setting as well.
these two methods avoid playing with the DVD drive firmware and that sort of stuff.

didn't know about the 8.2!
at first i tried VLC but didn't work. but now that i downloaded the new one it works like a charm!
