I know this isn't a long term solution....but if you happen to have Roxio's Toast you can mount them using that. It usually mounts what Apple's disk mounter can't handle.

I thought the same thing, unfortunately after I downloaded the 10.4.2 combo updater, the the 10.4.2 combo .dmg disk image won't mount. I get the same notice stating that the device is not configured...

Yep, no luck. It's a real puzzle, I really don't want to have to do a clean install.
