HDTV's & Macs

Hey, I'm shamefully ignorant on HDTV's and I'm thinking of going shopping for one soon. I noticed that some have a DVI-looking port on them. I also know that there are more than one DVI variations. Can I plug my Mac directly into an HDTV at the TV's full resolution? What feature do I need to look for in a TV in order to do this?
