I have an old DOS program I would like to 'view' so I can check for text in it. It has an executable(.exe) and a large number of files with the extension .cc . I have X11 installed but have idea as to what I am doing, all help would be appreciated.

The quickest way is to use the "strings" command in Terminal. Type "man strings" in Terminal for instructions.
