defective ipod

My friend, who I'm trying to convince to buy an Apple computer, just bought an ipod. It worked well for about a week and then died--competely died--won't take a charge, not recognized by the computer--she lost all her music.

How common is this--I thought ipods were reliable--am I correct?

She is taking it back for an exchange, but her music is g-o-n-e.

Two minis I've given as gifts have had problems skipping songs, freezing for no reason, etc., but completely resetting them with iPod Updater seemed to have fixed those issues.

My own iPods (3G 40GB & 1G mini) never had these problems... maybe because I'm using them with my Macs instead of Windows machines?

At any rate, there will always be a small percentage of lemons, just have your friend send it back and get a replacement.

I'd be interested to know Apple's exact defect % because I suspect it is quite high. That said I've heard of many similar issues with Creative's so seems to be a general problem.

It should go without saying though don't keep the only copy of all your music on your iPod. They are a device that has a great chance of getting broken, lost or stolen.

sammick, I assume she tried resetting it with the Menu and Play buttons like it says in the manual?

I have a Gen *1* iPod, and it's locked three times on me in as many years, but each time a simple reset took care of it.

Also, with 6+ million sold, I've gotta believe that the failure % is really quite *low*. I can count on my fingers the number I've heard of dying completely online, and have never actually known someone with a dead one. *shrug*

the ipod mini i bought had a bad click wheel... but they just gave me a new one.. no questions, no nothing.. just "ill just replace it" and there ya have it... i've had no complaints w/ apple... i bought protection plans for both my ipods and my apple comnputers... and yea i've had problems... but w/ the warrenties, apple fixed my computer, and replaced my ipod no problem... ive been pleased w/ apple.. and teh machines are amazing... very very nice and effective.. i do a lot of music editing/creating, photoshop work, and even use imovie, and mac is soo easy when it comes to making stuff like this....
