My son wants to increase his HD space. Has a Maxtor with Windows on it. Doesn't have a Windows machine to reformat drive.

Can he place in the Mac and reformat there?

Shouldn't be a problem. Pop it in, and chances are it will be recognised as a drive anyway (MacOS reads DOS formatted disks etc), so you probably don't even NEED to format it. Best to give it a format though, to get rid of all of that windows rubbish, and make it more mac compliant.

So in short, it should be able to be formatted by disk utility.

I have done this many times, so I would have to say, Yes. Definitely.
