"Henrico County taxpayers will get first shot at buying an Apple iBook for $50.

The Board of Supervisors today passed an ordinance 4-0 to allow the taxpayers to buy county property sold at a fixed price, such as the laptops, for a period of time before the property is offered to the general public.

The sale, which had been scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, is now to be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Richmond International Raceway. No date has been set for sale of the iBooks to the general public.

Frank Thornton, chairman of the five-member board, is on vacation and did not attend the meeting.

The sale is open to anyone who resides in or pays taxes on property in Henrico. Prospective purchasers must provide proof of residency or tax payment.

The iBooks had been used by high school students, who this year will receive Dell laptop computers.

News of the sale sparked international interest and thousands of e-mails and phone calls to school officials.
