i've been having problems with my imac G5, and i'd like to buy a firewire enclosure to help me transfer my data (logic board issues, so no target disk or anything like that). i noticed that most don't mention anything about SATA compatibility, is that a problem? i'm pretty clueless when it comes to stuff like this, so if someone could explain a little and maybe recommend a good (and cheap!) enclosure, i'd really appreciate it

You'll want an enclosure that connects to your iMac using either Firewire or USB2.0. There are enclosures that do both, so you might want to look into those as well.

Internal to the enclosure, most are connected using IDE cables, that is, non-SATA drives. So you can't use your SATA drive in an external enclosure just yet.

There are only a handful of enclosures that take SATA drives internally, but externally, they connect via external-SATA, which your iMac (or any other Mac) don't have. So, you're stuck with the first option above.
