Escape Velocity: Nova.... as an MMORPG?
For those of you who do not know Escape Velocity by Ambrosia www.ambrosiasw.com, its one of the most addictive games outthere. I have spent weeks at a time playing it and look extremely forward to the third installment, Nova to ship. As insidemacgames released,Nova is going to be huge.
But while I can imagine there will be months of material to explore and almost limitless possibilities... I still think EV online would be an ultimate experience and would make a lotof money. At something like 4.95$ a month you would have hundreds of thousands of players hooked in an instant methinks.
While I may become the ultimate powerful dictator of the universe in the previous two EV, you never really had any competition after you builtup an amazing amount of money and basically invulnerable ships... it gets lonely. I would love to forge real live alliances with people you chat with, have a home planet, have factions, customize ships, skins, etc... it would just be so amazing.
I have see Moki post a few times around here... what do you think? It would be possible to do... will you do it? Who else would want it?
(edit: Loki to Moki... its 4am ok? )

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Andrew and the rest have argued again and again and again that there will not be an online multiplayer version of EV. They have several good reasons. Go read up on their UBB... I think there may be a FAQ that covers this.
(and it's moki, btw)
Enjoy.

What I do think they could do though is have a mini deathmatch style game that's gameranger compatable. You'd stay in one solar system & play matches that'd only last a few minutes each. I think that's something they may be able handle ... but EVN itself is taking a long time to get out the door ... so I guess it's best that they're not. It'd be a nice add-on though.

Maybe have a cut down version that doesnt take all of that into account but where you can at least meet up with 'real' people and stuff.
it would simply be nice to meet people and know that there are certain players with certain traits out there that are either frighteneing in power or generous or whatnot... go off on missions with friends, etc. Its certainly something that is doable... but I guess it wouldnt be EV as we know it.
Ah well, we may see in 3 years by the time EV 4 comes out
I guess after reading about the problems of missions and warping and time when you land at a station make sense... but still...

Seriously, how can you possibly propose that? Removing the timing functions there would disrupt the entire mission engine. There could be no time restrictions at all!

However, the way the nova engine is set up, people will be able to do their own huge stunning games without modifying the engine. Considering the wonderful plug-ins created for the first two EVs, I imagine that EV:Nova will have replayability for years to come.

Also, Matt Burch (programmer of the EV engine) has announced repeatedly that this will be his last game (Mac, PC or Otherwise). So don't expect an EV4 *ever*.

Really? That's dissappointing news. Glad EVN is OS X compatable in that case ... perhpas someone else from Ambrosia might be interested in continuing it (with Burch's permission)?
Hell, I have a tough enough time looking at somebody else's 200 line Java assignment and telling them what's going wrong.
... not saying it can't be done, just that it would be a very difficult job, even if Matt & everyone was willing to give it a shot.
Actually, I'm not sure who's intellectual property the engine is... Ambrosia or Matt?
