Safari automatically runs quicktime when viewing media on the internet correct? Can I change it so that when I watch a movie trailer for example, it would run with VLC instead of Quicktime?

Change default application for the media of interest to VLC. You will also have to uncheck the MIME type in QuickTime preferences.
I don't think you can uncheck quicktime. if you want to use flc you have to open the link in vlc or download it first then open it
I didn't say uncheck QuickTime. I said uncheck certain MIME types within QuickTime preferences. You will notice that JLock did not specify which formats he wants to open in VLC. It may very well be the case that he wants to view a format that can only be opened in QuickTime, but there is no way to tell until he is more specific.
