Simple Backup/Reformat Question

Hello,

My Powerbook's internal drive has an error Disk Utility can't fix, so I figure I should just reformat it. I'd like to minimize the loss of settings, preferences, registration information, etc, so I was wondering what the best way of backing up is for me.

I have an external drive capable of storing everything on my internal drive.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have a dot-mac account, use the Backup app from Apple.

Otherwise, I recommend SuperDuper (find it on VersionTracker).

Thanks for that information. I'll take a look at that.

    By the way --

What does it mean when Disk Utility gives the error "should be 1 leaf, actual is 511" or something. That's the error it can't fix.

So basically, first I should make a disk image of my entire internal drive and save it to my external. Then I should reformat my internal drive, boot from either a CD or my external, and choose "restore" from disk utility. In "restore," I should choose the disk image I had earlier saved, and it will just put everything back where it belongs?

    Is that right?
