Katrina Volunteer Information

While observing this tragedy of epic porportions, I was overwhelmed by the need to do something. So I started looking for information on how to volunteer.

So after making many calls, I decided to post the info that I have gathered.

I called Adventist Community Services

800 381 7171

They had an operator on duty who took my information and skills offered and such. He told me I would recieve a call within 24 hours.

I made a call to another charity that gave me the number to The Salvation Army in the areas of the disaster:

601 969 7560

I left a message with someone, as there was no operator on duty when I called.

I have also talked to local firefighters that are going to put me in touch with a couple of fire & rescue organizations that are needing volunterrs.

Here are some organizations that are requesting volunteers:

No problem. Myself and several friend are trying to get up there this weekend.

Please make sure you get with a reputable organization, if you decide to go there. They are having problems with unorganized volunteers. They may turn you away if not.

    Update:

The Salvation Army HQ in the effected area is no longer taking volunteers. They have been overwhelmed with the support offered and they have no way at the moment to support a large volunteer contingent. They are working to remedy the situation. But they say about a month or more before they will have the means to support the volunteers.

FEMA just set up a volumteer help line and website at:

    http://volunteer.hhs.gov/

You can volunteer and they will contact you.

    If you can, sign up.

My attempts to get into the affected areas has failed, although I came pretty close. I still have a posible line to get in and help.

If you have info please post it here.
