Why are some third-party Mac applications absolute memory/CPU hogs?
I don't mean to criticize Apple or necessary to criticize the writers of these apps, but I've noticed that some of my apps eat up an outrageous amount of RAM and/or CPU:
1) Firefox
2) Thunderbird
3) eDonkey
Is there someting about the Mac platform that some developers see as an invitiation to take resource hogging shortcuts, or is it just simply a question of developer incompentence?

One of my Cocoa apps, Jumble® Helper, is only 56KB of code and loads a 9MB file on startup. OS X assigns it 20 MB of memory. I have no idea why.
