Weird crud in Preferences

I keep finding of empty folders in my /Users/Me/Library/Preferences folder... like this:

Always three character names, a mix of typically accented characters and random symbols.

Does anyone have any idea what app or process keeps making these things?

Do you have any other languages installed?

Well, I didn't strip other languages out using something like Monolingual, but English is the only language of the available languages that I'm currently using.

I suppose it might be interesting to consider those three-character sequences as if they were UTF-8 strings, being displayed incorrectly as one character per byte, and look up what they'd be. Single Chinese glyphs, perhaps? Of course, I'm not sure if I'd need to consider each character as it's MacRoman or ISO Latin equivalent, so I'd have to see what either interpretation leads to.

At any rate, the folder are always empty, so I don't quite see the sense of these folders appearing even if they were meant to be for settings when running with a different language.
