I have a lot of problems with my professional software (medical software developped under 4D) on the powermac G5 1,6 of my secretary. It bugs all the time, and even the powermac freeze, and we have to press the start button ...

When we had the old version of 4D running on classic, the soft was damn slow, but there was almost no bugs. After this swicth it's nighmarish, and we have called them several times unsuccesfully.

The weird thing is that my dual G5 do not freeze at all. The server is a single 1,8 ghz powermac. All the computers are connected via a gigabit ethernet network.

The technician of the software said that I must reinstall the OS, and that I must use Panther (in it's latest version) instead of Tiger. They said that there is stability problems with Tiger. I am a bit surprised of this, it's the first time I hear this.

What's is your opinion on this subject ?

PS : I have already did a clean install of the defective power mac of my secretary. BTW I did have huge problems to reinstall the whole thing. I wonder I should do a clean install on a new HD ?

I can confirm that *some* software can go into a virtual coma when run on a new 10.y of OS X. I had Avid Xpress DV 3.5 on my Mac running Jaguar and when I upgraded to Panther the .app wouldn't load...at all. A few hundred dollars (in Avid's pocket) later and I had Xpress Pro 4, which was compatible.

I would not be surprised if you were experiencing the same kind of thing, 'doc.

I'd definitely do an Erase and Install.

And yes, the Panther > Tiger transition has been a rougher-than-usual one for compatibility and stability.

And - shouldn't this be in the Genius Bar?
