As a general rule, I don't buy extended warranties.
With Apple, you have the first year (until the standard warranty expires) to decide whether or not to buy AppleCare.
I bought AppleCare for my iMac4 days before the standard warranty expired... because the machine has been in for repairs already. One of the "logic board" problems that a few of the first gen's had. If I hadn't had any problems during the first year, I'd have skipped the AppleCare.

Anyhow, that's my take on it.
